Panagbenga starts drawing tourists

THE annual Baguio Flower Festival known as "Panagbenga" has started to draw visitors to this mountain resort, 250 kilometers north of Manila.

The City Tourism Office has not yet made any estimate of the arrivals since the festival opening last February 1, but the drawing power of "Panagbenga" for the whole month averages one million foreign and local tourists.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan has observed that more local communities, as well as foreign cities in countries where Baguio has had sisterhood ties are now taking part of the biggest tourism extravaganza here.

Mines bureau warns vs illegal mining

BANGUED, Abra -- A Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) official warned anew of the dangers of unabated illegal mining activities to the environment and the people.

MGB-Cordillera Director Orlando Pineda aired the warning when he saw the deteriorating condition of Mt. Capcapo in the town of Licuan-Baay in Abra where small-scale mining activities are being conducted by the locals and miners from other provinces.

Pineda said with the deteriorating condition of the mining site, it is not far that accidents like what happened in Mt. Diwalwal in Compostela Valley could happen here too.

Meat inspectors hold summit

AROUND 150 deputized local government unit (LGU) meat control officers and meat inspectors from all over the country participated in the first national summit hosted by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) in Baguio City.

NMIS Executive Director Jane Bacayo said the summit aims to convene all deputized meat control officers and meat inspectors to have a short-term planning for enforcement implementation in support of the local government's meat inspection system and to align and harmonize the implementation and enforcement of NMIS-issued laws and regulations.

TABUK, Kalinga -- It's all systems go for the holding of the 2012 Cordillera Administrative Regional Athletic Association (Caraa) competition hosted by the province on February 9-13.

Governor Jocel C. Baac, who chairs the Cordillera Regional Development Council (RDC), said the provincial sports complex is ready for the various sports competitions.

Baac earlier ordered the rehabilitation of the covered grand stand, which was destroyed by previous typhoons, and the leveling of the athletic ground.

Cordillera athletes join national elite list

FOUR Cordillerans were recently included as among the 29 priority athletes after their golden performance in the recent Southeast Asian Games.

Boxers Alice Kate Aparri, Wushu's Eduard Folayang and Mark Eddiva, wrestling's Jason Balabal were among the athletes named by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) who will receive a monthly allowance of P40,000, an improvement from their previous take of only P25,000.
